Da Pode Restaurant in San Gimignano

Our story

The story of Da Pode Restaurant begins in 1962, when great grandfather Gianni Testi, known as Brinchio, a prominent figure in San Gimignano and a cattle merchant, purchased the “Podere della curva dell’Esse”. It was he who started it all, which has today become our family business in every sense.

The birth of Da Pode Restaurant

In those same years, his grandson Sergio was attending hotel management school, and during the summers worked as a seasonal waiter in hotels across Italy and abroad. After a renovation between 1965 and ’66, the farmhouse began to take shape: it was designed following the most typical Tuscan tradition and stood in an excellent position, on the main road connecting San Gimignano to Poggibonsi and just a few meters from Via Vecchia, the road that, following the contours of the hills, leads with a short walk to the ancient medieval town.

Brinchio chose to invest in his grandson, keeping the farmhouse so that one day it could pass to Sergio, who would then be free to start his own business. And that is exactly what happened.

The Failli family, today

Today the Failli family tradition continues through Alessia and Barbara, daughters of Sergio and Lucia, and the same care as always remains intact: hospitality, respect for the land and good food, with the goal of offering guests the best possible experience.

From Sovestro to Da Pode

Until the early 1980s, Sovestro was run under a sharecropping arrangement by a farming family. Later, Sergio, together with his father Alfredo, known as Pode, and Sergio’s wife Lucia, began renovating the house, making changes and improvements both inside and out, through years of hard work and sacrifice. In July 1985 the work was completed and a new adventure began: Da Pode Restaurant opened its doors.

Tuscany restaurant

Ours is a typical Tuscany restaurant, and beyond the cuisine, the building itself has kept its traditional look, that of the old countryside farmhouses: in the dining rooms you can still find objects and tools from the rural culture of the past, direct evidence of that history. On the menu, typical Tuscan dishes tell the story of our roots, with recipes rooted in the area’s farming tradition and ingredients that, still today, largely come from the countryside surrounding the restaurant.

Hotel Sovestro

Just steps from Da Pode Restaurant is Hotel Sovestro, tied to our family and run by us for generations. Those wishing to extend their stay will find here a convenient base for exploring San Gimignano and the surrounding countryside, while staying just steps from the restaurant.

Tenuta Sovestro

Just minutes away is Tenuta Sovestro, the family’s agriturismo nestled among vineyards and olive groves. This is where we produce the wine and oil we also serve at our restaurant, a testament to the bond between the land and Da Pode’s cuisine.
